Many families have parents living in Hyderabad while the children work in Bengaluru, Pune, the Gulf, the US or elsewhere. Distance makes every health worry harder: you cannot simply drop by. With a little planning, you can make sure your parents are safe and well cared for, even from far away.

Build a local support circle

  • One or two trusted people nearby: a relative, a neighbour or a family friend who can visit at short notice
  • Your apartment association and security: make sure they know your parents live there, and have your number
  • Their regular doctor: keep the name, clinic and phone number handy
  • Share everyone's contact details with each other, not just with you

Keep health information in one place

  • An up-to-date list of every medicine, dose and time
  • Their medical conditions and allergies, and their blood group
  • Recent prescriptions, discharge summaries and test reports, scanned and shared with you
  • Keep a paper copy near the door or the fridge, where a visitor or ambulance team can find it

Plan for an emergency

  • Save 108 (ambulance) and 112 (emergency) on their phones, and make sure they know to use them
  • Write down the full address with a landmark, and gate or tower details, so an ambulance can find them quickly in a large gated community
  • Know which hospital is nearest, and which one their doctor prefers
  • Agree who nearby will go to the hospital with them if needed

Stay in regular touch

  • A daily call at a fixed time is reassuring for everyone, and quickly shows if something is wrong
  • Video calls let you notice changes you might not hear: weight loss, tiredness, or confusion
  • Watch for warning signs such as missed medicines, falls, spoiled food in the fridge, unpaid bills, or changes in mood or memory

Make the home safer

Falls are one of the biggest risks for older adults living alone. Our elderly parent care checklist covers lighting, grab bars, loose rugs and more.

Care that comes to them

Regular visits from a registered doctor or nurse can check blood pressure and sugar, review medicines and catch problems early, without your parents having to travel across the city. You can ask the professional to share an update with you after the visit.

HoMedi is launching across Hyderabad to help families find registered doctors, dentists and nurses who visit homes nearby. See Doctor home visits in Hyderabad for how home visits work, and the localities HoMedi covers.

Questions people ask

A written list of their medicines and conditions, recent prescriptions and reports, their doctor's number, their blood group, and the full address with a landmark and gate details, so an ambulance or helper can reach them quickly.

Warning signs include missed medicines, weight loss, an untidy home or spoiled food in the fridge, falls or new bruises, unpaid bills, and changes in mood or memory. Mention any of these to their doctor.
