Getting to a clinic in Hyderabad can mean traffic, parking and a long wait, which is hard for an older parent, someone recovering from surgery, or a sick child. For many problems, a doctor can come to you instead. This guide explains when a home visit makes sense and what to expect.

When a home visit makes sense

A doctor at home is often the right choice when the person is unwell but stable, and travelling would be difficult or tiring:

  • Fever, cough, cold or body ache, without emergency warning signs
  • A review of blood pressure, sugar levels or medicines for a long-term condition
  • A check-up after a hospital discharge
  • An older adult or bedridden patient for whom travel is hard or unsafe

A registered nurse can visit for injections, drips, dressings and other care that a doctor has prescribed. A dentist can visit to examine teeth and check dentures.

When it does not

A home visit is not for emergencies. Call 108 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding, a seizure or loss of consciousness. Some problems also need tests, scans or procedures that can only be done at a clinic or hospital. Our guide Home visit, clinic or hospital? How to decide explains the difference.

What a doctor can do at home

  • Take a history and examine the patient
  • Check blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels and temperature, and listen to the chest
  • Prescribe medicines and advise on further tests
  • Review ongoing treatment and existing medicines
