When a family member needs a blood transfusion, the search for the right blood group can be stressful, especially when time is short. This guide explains how to find blood at licensed blood centres in Hyderabad, and what to prepare.
Start with the hospital
If the patient is in hospital, ask the hospital first. Many hospitals have their own blood centre or a tie-up with one, and they will know what is needed. Ask:
- Which blood group, which component (such as whole blood, packed red cells, platelets or plasma), and how many units
- Which blood centre they work with
- What paperwork is needed
What the blood centre will need
Blood is usually issued against a request from the treating doctor or hospital, and a sample of the patient's blood is normally needed so that it can be cross-matched. Carry the request form, the sample if asked, and an ID. Requirements vary, so confirm with the centre before you go.
Check availability at licensed blood centres
The government's e-RaktKosh system publishes blood stock at licensed blood centres. You can search it through HoMedi's blood centre finder, which shows centres in Hyderabad and their published availability by blood group.
Always phone the centre before you travel. Availability is published by each centre and can change within minutes, so what you see online may already have changed.
HoMedi is not a blood bank: it does not store, supply, cross-match or transport blood, and it cannot reserve units for you. The finder simply helps you see which licensed centres to call.
Asking for donors
Some blood centres ask families to arrange replacement donors. If so:
- Ask relatives, friends and colleagues who are healthy adults
- Share the patient's name, hospital, blood group and the centre's address
- Donors are screened by the centre, which decides who can donate
In an emergency
If someone is bleeding heavily or has collapsed, call 108 straight away. Do not delay emergency care to search for blood: the hospital will arrange what is needed.
Giving blood
Regular voluntary donation keeps blood centres stocked for everyone. If you are healthy and eligible, consider donating at a licensed blood centre near you.
Questions people ask
Usually not. Blood is issued against a request from the treating doctor or hospital, and a sample of the patient's blood is normally needed for cross-matching. Ask the hospital exactly what the blood centre needs.
Not always. Availability is published by each centre and can change within minutes. Always phone the blood centre to confirm before you travel.
